A variation on an old mech jockey joke: “What weighs 65 tons, has no arms, and can shoot you without looking?” “I don’t know, but I’m getting the hell out of here.”

Piranha Games released a handful of screens featuring the subject of the above, a mech found in the upcoming free-to-play Mechwarrior Online dubbed Catapault. One of the series’ more infamous models, the Catapault is a support unit designed to shoot from the cheap seats while its beefier teammates tackle the enemy head-on. When modified with certain long-range weaponry it will be able to attack “painted” targets from outside its visual range utilizing the game’s much-boasted information warfare system, as well.

The screens also demonstrate how a mech’s model can change depending on its equipment layout, featuring a very distinct shift from LRM racks to what appear to be autocannons on its shoulders between shots. It may seem like a little detail, but it’s one that not only gives a more solid feeling of customization but also allows for quick visual recognition of another player’s loadout on the battlefield.
