We haven't had too much in the way of news come out of E3 concerning Firaxis' take on the XCOM franchise, but we're definitely not leaving empty-handed. 2K Games released a shiny new trailer to keep us hyped as we continue the slog through summer to the game's October 9 release.

hawken

This isn't Hawken's first E3, but with any luck it'll be their last so long as the December 12 release date holds. The mech-based FPS, under development by Adhesive Games and using the Unreal 3 engine, looks just as pretty as ever despite the nagging disclaimer at the top left of every video reminding us that this is still a work in progress.

After the main exhibits of the E3 show floor closed yesterday, Square Enix invited press to its display to show off their new engine, Luminous Studio, and give us a taste of what caliber of graphics they have in store for their next-gen games. Square Enix technology chief Yoshihisa Hashimoto repeatedly assured the audience that the trailer was not pre-rendered but rather done in real time, suspicious but understandable given the video's contents.

Details on Star Wars 1313 are still a bit sparse (including what systems it will appear on), but as E3 goes on we've seen steadily more and more on the in-house development project by LucasArts. From what we've seen so far, the more adult, ground level take on the long-running franchise blends cinematic presentation in gameplay and cutscenes relatively seamlessly.

It seems that Nintendo has finally picked up on the notion, and while a physical location such as this will probably remain fantasy they're bringing the next best thing: a virtual theme park by the name of Nintendo Land.

Neither zombie games nor shooters are terribly uncommon, but for a Nintendo system this sort of thing can be a breath of fresh air. Because of the big N's unique situation born from its stance on family friendliness, an FPS in a pile of FPSes suddenly means much more to the Wii U, and that is precisely what Ubisoft presented at their conference today in the form of ZombiU.

Nintendo, desperation for third-party support in the current gen perhaps showing through, turned their conference into something of a revolving door of outside devs happy to get in on the ground floor of the Wii U. One of these, Warner Bros. Interactive, had a new version of last year's bestseller Batman: Arkham City to show off.

We can't say that our fears of Mario's latest outing coming off a bit samey were completely unfounded, but after seeing the debut gameplay trailer of the newly-christened New Super Mario Bros. U we're starting to think there will be enough new content to keep the project from being terribly redundant. Catering to the nostalgic player in typical fashion, NSMBU appears to be just as much its own game as a culmination of the 2D games that came before it.
